Herrington Park Cross Country December 2009

Herrington Park Cross Country

On 3rd December 2009 14 children from Years 4, 5 & 6 competed in our second of 6 meetings as part of our Cross Country League with 5 other schools (St. Michael’s, Houghton; St. John Boste, Washington; St. Joseph’s, Sunderland; St. Leonard’s, Sunderland and Sacred Heart, Newcastle) at Herrington Park.

The children competed in a relay competition between the 12 teams (6 A Teams and 6 B Teams). Each runner ran just over a mile in the competition.

The A Team were hoping to keep up their winning start to the season in this event and lay in third place through each of legs 1-3 with the team narrowing the gap created by a record breaking run by the St. Michael’s 1st leg runner Nathan Cobain (6:16).

On leg 4 Joel Jackson moved up into second place and Connor Malley retaining that position. As we changed over for the final leg it was once again up to Tom Hockings to chase down the St. Michael’s runner. The lead kept changing back and forth throughout the course and with 200 metres to go Tom overhauled the leader and moved away to give us a 3 second victory.

The B Team performed admirably to finish 7th overall.

Our fastest 3 runners were:

Tom Hockings 4th 6:43

Joel Jackson 5th 6:44

Joseph Shearer 8th 6:53

The next race is due to be held on March 25th at Backhouse Park, Sunderland where we hope to continue our undefeated start to the cross country season.
